john 2FROM SCIENCE TO ART

I was born and raised in Toronto. I always had a big interest in the arts but originally chose science as my career. I worked at the University of Toronto for a decade and during that time my side interest in art history brought me back to drawing and painting. In 2000 I left research to travel and to make some art. As it turned out the time was right and an immense creative potential led to a first series of paintings.

When I returned from my travels I was once again drawn into the science world- this time to work at the Ontario Cancer Institute. I did that for three years and during that time the blueprint of my first series of paintings began to take shape. I eventually left OCI and studied Graphic Design and Digital Applications for one year at George Brown College. Since then I have been working as a freelance graphic designer under the name Wildtype Design.

In the last few years I have been fortunate to continue my artwork and receive the odd painting commission. I feel I have achieved a mastry of skills required to produce a beautiful work of art- be it a portrait or otherwise.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

My work first and foremost is meant to be entertainment. There are lots of places in this world to wallow in negativity if that is your thing. My inner world is colourful, non linear, enigmatic at times but never overtly dark. There are recurring themes in my paintings. I like to let repetition happen because to me it stengthens the conceptual continuity of all of my work. I believe that all the work I do, despite it seeming different is coming from a systematic psyche.

I come from a science background and I approach aesthetic creation in a fashion similar to the scientific method. Every work in this site is an experiment that has been subjected to a rigid analysis and later deemed to have a positive or negative outcome. Sometimes I let the original idea evolve on the canvas through improvisation and accident. Other times, every detail has been mapped out in my head and it's only a matter of following the instructions.

I love puzzles and so I work them into what I do. I don't think that it's a necessary part to understanding and appreciating my work. Its just another level of interest I include for those that might be looking for something more. Proceed at your own risk.
